About
I am an historical archaeologist interested in the study of early settlers' foodways in colonial North America. While my main methodological focus is zooarchaeology, I am interested in the integration of multiple lines of evidence (archaeological, environmental, historical) to study past people's foodways.
For my Ph.D. project, I will be studying how the Acadians of the Maritimes appropriated and modified the landscape of Acadia, and how they exploited the environment around their settlements. While Acadia was a very large territory, the Acadians were largely settled around the Bay of Fundy, where they adopted specific agricultural and animal husbandry practices. Most importantly, they distinctively learned to exploit the tidal flats by dyking, thus creating some of the most fertile lands in North America.
